No more fear of the mailbox!! ✉️🧺

Remember the good old days of receiving cards and letters in the mail?

If you’re feeling drained by living in a world of online screens, where “socials” are making you feel more isolated than ever and you’re missing genuine connection, the Picnic Girl™ Monthly Mail Subscription is a way to bring meaningful connection directly to your mailbox.

When was the last time you went to the mailbox and found a lovely addressed letter that wasn’t a bill?

Can you remember how it felt to turn the envelope over and see who had taken time out of their day to choose the paper, write thoughtful words on the page, go to the post office and place a stamp on an envelope to send kindness directly to you?

Let me tell you about my most recent experience.

I moved house in February 2020, just before the Covid lockdowns. I moved to an older part of a country town in Victoria where lockdown lasted almost two years. The street was filled with large established trees — the kind with swings hanging from them — perfectly maintained gardens and beautiful old homes. It was a very wide street and, during lockdown, there was hardly any traffic passing through.

Every day I walked my dog around the neighbourhood, looking at the homes and imagining the days when the yards would have been full of children playing and laughing.

As the days went on, I started noticing an older lady with a walking frame out walking each day as well. She was always on the opposite side of the street.

One day I noticed the lady heading toward my house, so I stopped to allow her space to move safely with her walker. Instead, she stopped me and said she had been trying to catch me each day, but I walked too fast. We both laughed.

That was the beginning of a beautiful friendship I truly adore and cherish.

Her name was Gladys.

She told me she was 94 years young and had lived in the white house with the big tree for over 30 years. She had 10 children, 26 grandchildren and too many great-grandchildren to count.

Gladys had been a nurse. She loved line dancing, the Country Women’s Association and community activities, though lockdown had temporarily put all of that on hold.

From that day on, we saw each other most days — trading baked treats, sharing sewing fabrics and having cups of tea or the occasional afternoon riesling together.

If I wasn’t home, Gladys would use clothes pegs to leave little handwritten notes on my front gate inviting me over for “afternoon sips.”

We shared stories, laughter and companionship during such an uncertain time, and I always checked in on Gladys and reassured her family that I was nearby if she needed anything during lockdown.

After two years, I moved to Perth and we continued our friendship by writing letters to each other.

It always made my day when I received a letter from Gladys.

After about a year, I received one final letter.

Gladys had started writing it herself. She explained she had become unwell with cancer in her neck. As the letter continued, the handwriting slowly faded into scribbled lines across the page.

I turned over to read the next sheet.

It was from her daughter.

She explained that Gladys had passed away before she could finish the letter.

I was heartbroken by the loss of such a beautiful friend.

I still treasure every letter Gladys wrote to me, and ever since then I have thought differently about the simple magic of the mail system.

This subscription is created in honour of Gladys — her old-school snail mail, her delicious recipes, her generous community spirit and, most of all, her friendship.

Her family always thanked me for checking in on her, but truthfully, I think I gained more from our friendship than she ever did.

I miss her dearly.
